Millennial consumers and their choices increasingly drive the real estate market, several experts said this week at CBRE’s Sacramento 2016 forecast event.
For example: One factor holding back home construction is a delay among young consumers in forming households, said CBRE associate Brian Parker in a presentation to the gathering on Tuesday. And when they do buy, they are more interested in infill than greenfield subdivisions.

Millennial consumer patterns are also affecting retail, said associate John Brecher of CBRE Sacramento. Millennials like to be close to where they work and shop, and they're also big users of e-commerce, he said. That means local stores will need to find ways to get their wares into consumer hands quickly, Brecher said. He said Walmart in particular might ramp up such services in the Sacramento region.
